The Gibson family's organically farmed ranch has been Miner's prime source for Sangiovese since 1997. Cooler growing conditions near the Mendocino coast allow grapes to ripen at an even pace for balanced fruit and acid structure. The Hudson Vineyard Syrah is always a stand out in the Rudius portfolio for its considerably French-leaning style and and incredible balance. While many Northern California Syrahs are defined by their extract and viscosity, the Hudson is something altogether different. Both the mouthfeel and aromatics are dominated by secondary characteristics, brought to the forefront by beautifully balanced acidity.
Forrest mushrooms, roasted game meat and accents of cardamon spice are highlighted by just-ripe fig and a fresh brininess, owing to the distinct minerality of Hudson’s soils. The Rudius signature subtlety with oak on thier Rhones serves to preserve the pristine fruit character of the Alban Clone, while the purely native fermentation leaves the wine’s inherent aromatics intact. This is one California Syrah that strongly speak to its origin, and will undoubtedly remind you why you fell in love with the varietal and the terroir in the first place.
About the Wine While working with our growers in the Napa Valley, we came across small, premium vineyard lots of Merlot, which served as our inspiration to create Thorn. The sources of Merlot were blended with Syrah to create depth in the body while Malbec accentuates the fruit.

The 2014 growing season was another great one in Napa Valley. The Prisoner was created and inspired by the drinkable “mixed blacks” first made by the Italian immigrants who originally settled in the Napa Valley. The 2012 Winston Hill Proprietary Red Blend, which is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, is a pretty serious hombre. Dense ruby/purple in color with notes of créme de cassis, graphite and concentrated black cherries, the wine has good acidity, sweet tannin and a full-bodied mouthfeel. The purity and overall personality and character of the wine are impressive. It is a very youthful, relatively unevolved wine with tremendous upside. Give it another several years of bottle-age and drink it over the following 15-20 years.

With enticing flavors of blackberry, plum, black cherry, mountain herbs, jasmine and even a hint of creosote undulating in and out as it evolves in the glass, this is a wine to spend an evening getting to know. One reason I always love our Syrah is that its personality varies so dramatically from vintage to vintage depending on the growing season, with weather conditions at the time of budbreak through veraison and harvest all having a profound effect on the outcome. One constant is the rich, thick texture in the mouth, especially the mid-palate, with just enough tannic astringency to give the wine some size without hampering its silky, elegant profile.
It’s bright and ruby red, with intense purple hints. At the nose you find immediately smells of racking off followed by fresh berries and violet. In the mouth it reveals structure, thanks also to the role of Bovale grape, and it’s characterized by a good balance between freshness, sweet tannins and persistence. Monica is a varietal of Sardinian tradition, existing from the period of Spanish Aragon domination in Sardinia (about 1325 AC).

2009 was a temperate year with spells of warmth but free of extremes. This lengthy growing season cooled as harvest approached , embracing morning fog and moderate temperature throughout the picking. The resulting wines have a higher degree of density and flesh than the previous year, with aromatics more in the vein of dark fruit, spice, and earth. With a more masculine tannin structure, the 2009 will age very well over the next twenty to twenty-five years.
TD-9 is a proprietary blend that celebrates a bold move. In 1973, in the space of a few months, John Shafer went from riding morning commuter trains in Chicago to teaching himself to drive a TD-9 tractor in our Napa Valley vineyard. He’d never grown grapes or made wine in his life. That spirit of risk-taking and adventure still guides Shafer today and inspired the creation of this new wine.
